Deliveroo’s latest report highlights how restaurants can grow their sales by tapping into the students category  - a group that has increased their orders four times faster than any other on the platform in 2024.

Each year in September, millions of university students in the UK either leave home for the very first time or return to class for their second or third years. Now, not everyone turns up to university with the cooking skills of a Gordon Ramsay or a Marco Pierre-White - truthfully, pretty much nobody does. Over the following months, every student apartment is bound to experience some level of Kitchen Nightmare. But these are just some of many moments when delivery can come to the rescue of some very hungry students.

And so it’s no wonder that orders from students have grown four times faster than any other group on the platform in 2024, according to our recent study. For restaurants, those orders come with great potential.

Reaching students with irresistible deals

How can restaurant owners make the most of Deliveroo’s students customers? It doesn’t have to be complicated. Like any good student, doing your homework and getting to know their ordering habits usually pays off.  

For instance: students are notorious for loving a good deal . According to Deliveroo’s new report on students, they are more than twice as likely to order meal deals, with 41% of orders from students containing some kind of promotion or offer.

One of Deliveroo’s partners, Byron Burgers ran a successful spring promotion offering 15% off orders over £15 which saw an increase of 43% to in order value from the students, in the 2 weeks they ran the promotion.. With success juicier than one of their proper burgers, it’s no surprise that Byron decided to repeat the offer in autumn.

Another great example comes from LEON, who increased their student orders by a massive 60% when they ran an offer of 25% off orders over £20.

 It’s not just about deals however, it’s also important to be tuned into each and every moment where delivery can play a role in a student’s life. From getting in late after an infinite library session, to the big ones like a celebratory feast after a final exam, there’s more delivery occasions to cater to.

Actionable insights to reach more students

Our report helps you to understand these occasions by turning them into actionable insight. Take those late night orders for example,  students are twice as likely to order late at night than other customers and restaurants can easily capitalise on this by extending their opening hours in student areas.
